Similarly to all other cast iron cookware, the Lodge dutch oven is quite heavy, as it is made of a durable, high quality material. Although excellent for slow cooking, cast iron weighs 16.2 pounds, so the cookware may be a little difficult to lift or transport.
When used and cleaned improperly, the dutch oven may become rusty and add a metal taste to the cooked foods. However, this issue can be easily solved by simply re-seasoning the pan at home. Seasoning is the process through which the pores in the pan’s surface are filled with carbonized oil, forming a protective barrier against oxidation and preventing rusting.
The inside of the lid, shaped to keep moisture and flavor, is considered a vulnerable spot of the Lodge cast iron dutch oven and may require home seasoning when used for the first time.
